Barbed wire is a multi-strand wire fence with twisted barbs on each strand, and its job is to contain adult cattle and mark boundaries on large acreage at the lowest possible cost per foot.
It is the right fence for cow-calf and stocker perimeters, back-forty boundary lines and security top-wire on industrial chain link. It is the wrong fence for horses at any pressure level, for goats, sheep and hogs, and for any line where a calf getting out is unacceptable. S&S has been installing barbed wire across Kentucky farm country since 2015, from short perimeter runs to multi-mile cattle lines.
On the security side, barbed and barbed-tape top treatments still belong on industrial and high-security perimeters and on commercial chain link — that use has not changed.
S&S installs 12.5 gauge barbed wire in 2-point and 4-point patterns, in Class 1 or Class 3 galvanizing, at 3, 4 or 5 strands depending on livestock class.
Class 1 and Class 3 barbed wire look identical on the spool. If a bid does not name the class, it is not comparable — S&S writes the class into the scope.
Barbed wire holds its geometry only if every corner, end and gate is a full braced assembly — two posts 8 ft apart at 4 ft embedment with a horizontal compression member and a diagonal tension wire opposing the pull.
Driven posts. We drive line posts rather than hand-setting them so the soil compacts around the shaft — longer holding power and less frost heave. Rock and hardpan handled with augering and driving.
Tensioning. Each strand tensioned individually; in-line strainers on high-tensile barbed lines allow re-tensioning without disturbing the others.
Terrain following. Post spacing tightened through dips and crowns, tie-downs where wire would lift.
Water gaps. Creek crossings built as breakaway flood-gate sections so a flood takes the gap and not the fence.
Gates. 12–16 ft field gates for equipment on 7–8 in posts at 4.5–5 ft embedment.
Barbed wire is the cheapest permanent fence to install and the shortest-lived at 15 to 20 years, which means a line rebuilt in barbed wire will be rebuilt again inside the service life of one fixed-knot woven wire fence.

Expect 15 to 20 years from a Class 3 barbed line, with a walk of the fence twice a year and re-tensioning as strands loosen.
Twice a year — walk the line, re-tension slack strands, clear brush.
After storms — reset water gaps and clear fallen limbs before wire takes a permanent set.
Annually — inspect brace diagonals; a slack diagonal means the corner is walking.
Warranty work — one-year workmanship warranty on S&S installs. We do not repair fences built by others.
On cost per year of service rather than cost per foot, barbed wire is the most expensive wire fence on this page for any line you intend to keep for 30 years.
Two barbed rebuilds inside 40 years, plus twice-yearly re-tensioning labor and the stock that gets through, exceeds the cost of one correctly braced fixed-knot fence. Where barbed wire genuinely wins is a short-horizon boundary line, a leased tract, or a cattle-only perimeter on a tight budget — and in those cases it is the honest recommendation.
