What's the difference between split-rail and post-and-rail?

Split-rail uses rough-hewn, naturally-shaped rails inserted through holes in matching split posts — the classic rustic look. Post-and-rail uses milled, uniform lumber attached to face-mounted posts for a cleaner, more architectural appearance. Both are decorative perimeter fences, not livestock containment.

How long does a cedar split-rail fence last in Kentucky?

A properly installed locust or cedar split-rail fence typically lasts 15-25 years in Kentucky's climate. Pressure-treated pine split-rail will go 10-15 years. Posts set in concrete vs. tamped gravel makes a big difference.

Can split-rail contain dogs or livestock?

Not on its own — the open rails are decorative. We routinely add black welded-wire mesh or wood-grain vinyl mesh on the inside of split-rail to contain dogs while keeping the rustic look from the road.

Standard heights are 2-rail (about 36") and 3-rail (about 48"). We can custom-size for sloped yards, equestrian driveways, or HOA requirements.
