Post Augering vs. Post Driving

Augering: Clean bored holes for concrete-set posts. Best for loose, sandy, or rocky soils where driving would shatter posts or wander off-line. Available for 4x4 through 8x8 square posts and round cedar up to 6". Standard depths are 24"–42" depending on post size, fence height, and frost line.

Driving: A hydraulic driver pounds posts directly into the ground. Best for Kentucky clay soil where bored holes collapse on you. Driving is faster and more economical for long agricultural runs of round posts and T-posts — we can set a mile of T-posts in a day where augering would take a week.

Why Hole Depth and Diameter Vary

There is no single "right" hole. Depth depends on the fence height, the post size, and what the fence has to withstand — a six-foot privacy fence catches wind like a sail and needs more post in the ground than a three-foot ranch rail. Corner posts, gate posts, and end posts carry the load of the whole line, so they go deeper and wider than line posts. Diameter matters too: enough room around the post for concrete to flow and lock, without wasting material. When we quote a job, we spec the holes to the fence — not the other way around.

Kentucky Soil and Rock

Kentuckiana ground changes fast. One property is deep, workable loam; the next is heavy clay that collapses into a bored hole; the next has rock shelf not far down. Loose and sandy soils auger cleanly and take concrete well. Clay often drives better than it bores. Rock is where rental equipment gives up — and where having both an auger and a hydraulic driver on the truck means we switch methods instead of switching excuses. If you're planning a long run of high-tensile or other agricultural fence, the soil decides the method, and we bring both.

Before We Drill — Get Utilities Marked

Any time a post goes in the ground, utilities need to be marked first. Call 811 — it's free in both Kentucky and Indiana — a few days before the work, and the utility companies come out and mark their lines.
